The Terrace Regional Museum Society established Heritage Park Museum. This society was formed in 1982 with a group of five people under the leadership of Mrs. Mamie Kerby. Other members were Aileen Frank, Marie Piffer, Vera Frank and Norma Kerby.
This small group of five gathered together to form an organization to collect and preserve the histories and artefacts, left by people who were settling in the Terrace area at the turn of the century and after.
Realizing that a building would be needed to house these collections, this group took a look at the Kalum Lake Hotel, a heritage structure still on its original site at Kalum Lake. This building at the time was falling victim to attack by vandals. With the idea that the log building could serve as a museum, the group decided to have it moved to a piece of parkland in the city of Terrace. This parkland, at that time, was owned by the British Columbia Building Corporation. They generously turned the property over to the city of Terrace for the society and the purposes of a Museum.
From this time on, there followed many hours of volunteer labour. Mrs. Mamie Kerby along with her husband Fred and the small group of five members rose to a membership of over forty volunteers. Over the years, with government grants, and help from the community, the society ended up with eight log buildings, a large post and beam storage building and a open sided shed for other large artefacts. The society collected more than 4000 artefacts and have displayed them in informative and educational exhibits in all nine of the buildings at the Museum.
For sixteen years, led by volunteers, The Terrace Regional Museum Society worked to preserve Terrace’s history and played host to many visitors from all over the world. On March 26th, 1999 direct involvement by The Terrace Regional Museum Society ended when they handed over Heritage Park Museum to the City for the next step forward. From 1999 - 2004 the Museum was run by The Terrace and District Facilities Society and in late 2004 the newly established Terrace and District Museum Society took over operations at the Museum and hired the first full time Director/Curator that the Museum has had in it’s history.
