The Tsimshian
people have lived in and around the Terrace area for thousands of years. Immediate
neighbours being the communities of Kitsumkalum
and Kitselas. Newcomers have had a
relationship with the First Nations people in this area for many years.
Without this relationship very few early settlers would have been able to
traverse the rivers and find their way through this vast and breathtaking
country. By the late 1870’s these newcomers started settling more
permanently in the area. At the turn of the last century, logging,
mining and farming became major industries here. This brought many people
to the area from as far away as Australia. George Little,
owner of one of the first sawmills in the area, is credited as the Founder
of Terrace. Originally called Littleton,
Terrace became a village in 1912, and was officially incorporated in 1927.
The Museum reflects the way of life in Terrace at that time.
Many of the families who contributed to the
creation of Terrace still live in the area today, and artifacts from their
journeys and their lives are on display at the museum.
